Pedestrian involved in Monday’s alleged hit-and-run left in coma, victim’s friend says

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A Colorado Springs woman is still in a coma after she was allegedly hit by a car that drove off on Monday night.

The alleged pedestrian hit-and-run happened Monday, September 21, on Galley Road near North Academy Boulevard in east Colorado Springs. The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) says it is still looking for the driver.

The victim, Tamara Morris, moved to Colorado Springs a couple of months ago, according to her friend, David Huerta. He says he had been helping her find a place to live, a job and a car. That was until the unthinkable happened.

Huerta said he hadn’t heard from Morris since Sunday. Late Monday night, he stopped by her place to check on her.

“To not be there at night when I thought she would probably be there, that just kind of concerned me a little bit,” Huerta said.

Huerta said he left a note on her bed, telling her to call him. He came by again Tuesday to find the note untouched. He’d soon get a text from Morris’ niece, who lives out of town, asking if he had heard about any car accidents in Colorado Springs.

“I know there was a pedestrian (who) was hit, and that's when she actually told me that it was her aunt, (which) was Tamara,” Huerta said.

Huerta said he’s been visiting her at the hospital every day since, waiting for her to wake up from her coma. He also said she suffered brain bleeding and swelling, along with several broken bones.

“They're fighting for their life, and [there's] nothing really you can do," Huerta said.

He said it’s been hard not knowing exactly what happened that night, and he hopes to get clarity soon.

“She needs support from the community, and hopefully we find who's responsible," Huerta said.

CSPD said this remains an open and active investigation. Anyone with information on the alleged hit-and-run is asked to contact CSPD's non-emergency line.
