Recycling efficiency could increase 12 percent with new technology
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Republic Services is implementing a modern optical sorting mechanism to increase efficiency at its recycling operations.
Upon completion, the new equipment is projected to process 12% more recyclable items that would have otherwise been sent to landfills, according to officials.
The infrastructure upgrade aligns with Colorado's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program. Under the program, participating waste management firms are allowed to offer recycling services to clients without charging customers directly. The initiative is funded through fees levied against businesses that manufacture paper goods and packaging materials.
Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade noted that Colorado must enhance its recycling performance and stated that investing in advanced technology allows for greater cost-effectiveness.
Deborah Nelson, representing the Circular Action Alliance, explained that the state's recycling rates currently lag behind national benchmarks.
“So we know that our recycling rates in Colorado don't even hit the national mark right now,” Nelson said. “And we're talking about almost doubling our recycling rates here in the state through this program.”
Nelson detailed how funding moves through the program to cover local operational expenses.
“Instead, that entity, whether it's the hauler or the local government, they come to us to say, this is how much it cost me in order to pick up that curbside recycling,” Nelson said. “And we will now pay the cost on behalf of the producers that are bringing that paper and packaging into Colorado.”
Thomas Brackett represents Republic Services of Colorado Springs. Brackett anticipated a noticeable increase in overall recycling participation as the new state program launches.
“With EPR going into effect, I'm guessing that we'll probably see a 30% increase in recycling,” Brackett said.
Critics of the EPR program argue that the program actually increases prices for consumers, because many companies increase the cost of their packaging to cover the fee they pay into the program.
