Officials identify two people killed in crash on Marksheffel Road in August

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The El Paso County Coroner's Office has identified the two people killed in a two-vehicle crash on Marksheffel Road last month.

53-year-old Francine Shumake and 61-year-old Brenda Baker were killed after officials say their car failed to negotiate a slight curve and entered the northbound lanes of Marksheffel Road, hitting another car.

The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) says the crash happened on August 31 around 1:40 p.m. on Marksheffel Road near East Gate Street. According to officials, when officers and medical personnel arrived at the scene, officials noted two sedans were involved in the accident.

A preliminary investigation showed a Toyota sedan was travelling southbound on Marksheffel Road when it wasn't able to navigate a curve on the road and entered the northbound lane. That is when CSPD says it hit a Chevy sedan going northbound.

The two people inside the Chevy were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

CSPD says this incident marks the 42nd and 43rd traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs this year.

The investigation is still open and ongoing; anyone with information is asked to contact CSPD.
