Neighbors react to suspect apprehended in their neighborhood after two Colorado State Patrol Troopers shot during a traffic stop

TELLER COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Neighbors were shocked Tuesday when a suspect who allegedly shot two state troopers in a traffic stop was apprehended in their neighborhood.

The suspect was pronounced dead around noon Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the Pikes Peak Regional Hospital in Woodland Park. KRDO13 spoke with neighbors in Woodland West, where the suspect was apprehended and shot by the Teller County Sheriff's Office (TCSO).

Mike Wright woke up today like any other day. He went outside to dump out some water, not realizing the suspect was only a few hundred yards away from his home in Woodland West. 

Wright says he saw a law enforcement vehicle and heard an aircraft flying above the neighborhood that caught his attention. He says a TCSO deputy was charging toward the house with his gun pointed out.

Wright said the deputy identified himself and told the suspect to put his hands up. 

That’s when Wright said the gunfire started. Then, it was quickly back to quiet again.

“He was charging toward the front or toward the shed... Obviously, he must have had him down because he went up there, and there was no more gunfire," Wright said.

Another neighbor, Susan Richards, got stuck outside of the Woodland West neighborhood during the shelter-in-place while law enforcement was going after the suspect. Richards was on her way to work in Colorado Springs and needed to go back home to grab something she had forgotten.

Richards was stuck outside on the road waiting to re-enter Woodland West when she said she heard gunshots ring out. She said about 15 minutes later, an ambulance was going down the hill. 

“I’ve lived in this house for 36 years, and I have never had an experience like this. Not here in this neighborhood, and certainly not even in Woodland Park,” Richards.

Officials said in a press conference that the suspect tried to ambush the TCSO deputy, which resulted in multiple rounds of shots being returned.

Aid was rendered to the suspect on-scene, and the suspect was transported to the Pikes Peak Regional Hospital, according to officials at the press conference. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to officials.

Officials said one trooper is still being treated but confirm both troopers are expected to recover. As of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, one of the troopers had been released from the hospital, according to officials.
