City of Fountain turns to sheep for short-term weed control project

FOUNTAIN, Colo. (KRDO) -- The City of Fountain is trying a new un-baa-lievable technique for weed mitigation in the city.

28 sheep will soon be living short-term on a 25-acre piece of land that houses a power substation and solar array. City officials say the purpose is to control the weeds on the property.

The city has tried other techniques at the property that sits along C&S Road, but they haven't been as effective, according to city officials. Utility officials reached out to a local family to see if they'd be willing to lend their sheep.

The Bakers, who have lived in the Fountain area for a while, are bringing a total of 28 sheep to the area. 10 arrived on Monday, and the other 18 are coming later in the week. The sheep are used to the travel, and were recently at rodeos doing mutton bustin'.

Officials say the sheep will remain on the ground to eat any vegetation and overgrowth on the property. They are expected to stay there until the temperatures get closer to freezing.
