Nine miles of new trails opening at Fishers Peak State Park this weekend

TRINIDAD, Colo. (KRDO) -- Nine miles of new trails are opening tomorrow at Fishers Peak State Park.

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the nine miles are spread out across three different trails called Storyteller, First Spring and Chaquaqua. The new trails will make loops that connect with Fishers Peak Trail, the main route to the summit at the park, according to officials.

CPW says the new loops will help hikers and bikers, especially during parts of the year when the summit is closed for peregrine falcons to nest. That closure usually runs from March to July.

According to park officials, all three trails are named after the landscape and visitor encounters. They will also let visitors see more of the ecological diversity of the park, including parts that are seen better in higher elevations.

CPW also says starting Saturday, the Goldenrod Trail will be open for mountain bikers. The trail used to be for hiking only, but now bikers will be allowed to explore over 4 miles of the park. Officials warn bikers can only ride uphill on the trail.

To celebrate the new trail openings, CPW says there will be events planned from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including events for children and families. Officials warn visitors to start early and bring plenty of water and food.

A valid CPW parks pass or Keep Colorado Wild Pass is required for entry to the state park, according to CPW. For more information on Fishers Peak State Park, visit their website.
