‘Sikes Ranch’ fire near Crow Cutoff in Colorado City 100% contained, reminds neighbors of ‘Aspen Acres’

PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) reported that several fire agencies are responding to a wildland fire off Crow Cutoff in Colorado City.

PCSO says the fire was named the "Sikes Ranch" fire.

As of 5:20 p.m., officials say the fire was 100% contained at 6 acres.

PCSO had ordered evacuations for residents in the area 1/2 mile east of Crow Cutoff Rd. and Northeast of Bondurant Rd. Those evacuations were lifted at 5:05 p.m.

Officials told KRDO13 they believe the fire was started by lightning, and they don't believe it is human caused.

The brief evacuation order brought back memories for residents who were affected by the recent "Aspen Acres" fire. Colorado City resident Richard Simpson says he was relieved after learning the fire had been contained.

“Boy I'll tell you what, all the bad things go through your head,” Simpson said. “On the 'Aspen [Acres]' fire, we were evacuated for eight full days. So to get an evacuation order again, it just is almost devastating.”

Colorado City resident James Anderson described the ongoing tension neighbors felt as they monitored the smoke and flames.

“You're on nerves all the time,” Anderson said. “We really watched to see how that fire's going, because you can't tell. It may take off again. It's unnerving to think that could happen.”

With the blaze safely contained, residents were able to remain in their homes. Simpson praised the firefighters for their quick work in preventing a larger emergency.

“All our guys that come to these fires, they do such an awesome fantastic job,” Simpson said. “And when they already got the fire under control I mean it just like drained your body of gratitude for what they do. It's just everybody working together. Got the fire out and under control rapidly so it wouldn't become a major, major issue.”
