Department of War unseals files detailing Colorado Springs UAP encounters

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The U.S. Department of War has released information about two potential unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) spotted in Colorado Springs in 2023.

The Department of War says this is part of the fifth release of declassified and historical UAP files as part of the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE).

Officials say the materials in the files are unresolved cases where the government was "unable to make a definitive determination on the nature of the observed phenomena."

One of the new Colorado Springs sightings happened in October of 2023, when a former Department of War employee reported seeing a "dark translucent triangle," according to the documents. Officials created image renderings of the UAP based on the witness' description.

A second sighting was also seen in 2023. A witness, interviewed in October 2025, reported seeing a "large triangle with red lights" overhead. The Department of War says parts of the interview were redacted to protect sensitive information.

In the interview, the witness was described as someone who "frequently watches aircraft, military, commercial and civilian fly in the airspace above and around Colorado Springs."

According to the documents, the witness reports seeing a bright star in the sky between 8:00 and 9:30 p.m. The witness reported seeing a "dark-gray colored cloud phasing into his sight" that was stationary and looked distorted or pixilated. He reports seeing a constant red light on the bottom of a black, triangular-shaped object.

The witness says the UAP was around as large as the parking lot he was standing in and between three to five stories thick. The UAP was moving and banking before the witness lost sight of it.

In the interview, the witness reported calling his wife and she says he sounded robotic, like there was electronic interference.

This isn't the first time Colorado Springs has been listed in the released UAP documents. In June, five U.S. Army service members reported seeing a "potato-shaped" object flying over Cheyenne Mountain in 2022 while near Fort Carson, according to officials.
