Police issue warning after man in self-driving car says he wasn’t responsible for speeding

PARKER, Colo. (KRDO) -- Police in Parker recently stopped a man for speeding, but he says he's not responsible.

Now, the Parker Police Department is issuing this warning: Even if your car is self-driving, you're still responsible for the actions of the vehicle.

Body-worn camera footage posted to social media showed the officer pull the driver over, where he said he wasn't driving the car, because it was driving itself.

The incident happened after an officer pulled a man over for going 64 mph in a 45 mph zone. According to officials, the driver said they weren't responsible because their car's driver-assistance features were engaged.

Police say that even if a car has the ability to do things like adaptive cruise control, lane centering or full self-driving, the driver is still legally responsible for making sure the car operates safely.
