Former Colorado Springs police officer featured in Hulu true-crime docuseries ‘Betrayal: Dirty Secrets’

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A new Hulu true-crime docuseries shines a spotlight on a former Colorado Springs police officer, detailing allegations of infidelity, abuse of authority and the fallout for his family.

"Betrayal: Dirty Secrets" premieres Tuesday, Aug. 4 on Hulu as the fourth season of the Betrayal documentary series, which is based on the popular true-crime podcast of the same name. The three-part series follows Karoline Borega as she recounts the collapse of her marriage to former Colorado Springs Police officer Joel Kern.

According to the series, Borega initially believed Kern was a devoted husband and father before discovering he had engaged in numerous affairs over the course of their marriage.

The documentary includes interviews with Borega, the couple's daughter, Nicole, and others who describe Kern's alleged pattern of deception.

It also features exclusive video from the internal affairs investigation conducted by the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).

Among the allegations explored in the series are claims that Kern used his position as a police officer to facilitate his affairs, including accusations that he met sexual partners while on duty, according to USA Today.

Borega, along with podcast host Andrea Gunning, appeared on "Good Morning America" on Tuesday, Aug. 4, to talk about the series.

“When we saw the investigation files and heard the recordings, they really showed the extent of Joel’s behavior and his lies, and we knew this had to be a season,” Gunning said on GMA.

“It’s so validating to see that the split-screen life and what you thought was normal is something that you are able to heal from, and you begin to feel this sense of validation and truth from,” Borega said on GMA.

CSPD provided KRDO13 with the following statement:

“CSPD has nothing new to add to the record regarding former officer Joel Kern. Mr. Kern retired while under investigation by CSPD in 2022. Mr. Kern had been the subject of multiple Internal Affairs investigations and discipline, which have been documented in detail in the Betrayal podcast, through records requests provided to the podcaster at their request. Any officer may retire while a misconduct investigation is pending, because Colorado law does not authorize CSPD to withhold or revoke the officer’s earned pension benefits solely on that basis.”

According to ABC News, Kern was never charged with any crimes.
