Emergency fish salvage ordered at Daigre Reservoir to allow water to be used in Huerfano County

HUERFANO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) announced an emergency public fish salvage at the Daigre Reservoir on Wahatoya State Wildlife Area in Huerfano County.

CPW says a combination of extreme drought and municipal water needs has caused the reservoir to be drawn from to supply water to Walsenburg and La Veta. Officials say the Wahatoya Reservoir had already been drained for the same reason, and so they moved to the Daigre Reservoir for more resources.

Because of a potential loss of the fishery, CPW authorized the emergency public fish salvage to optimize use of the resource. CPW says it also plans to conduct fish salvage operations where they can, and relocate fish to other public waters if they are able.

Officials expect the fish recovered to be restocked into the Martin Reservoir and Horseshoe Lake at Lathrop State Park.
