CPW confirms new gray wolf pack, five total statewide

EAGLE COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) had confirmed a new gray wolf pack has formed in Eagle County.

The pack, dubbed the Piney Ridge Pack, marks the fourth pack this year that CPW says had successful reproduction.

Officials say an average litter size for wolves is four to six pups. Gray wolves are a state and federal endangered species. CPW collects information on the animals and look at where conflict minimization tools and techniques should be deployed to avoid wolf-livestock conflict.

The formation of packs can help both individual wolves and the overall restoration of the animals, CPW says. Data from the state has shown that wolves in packs have higher survival rates than those not in packs. CPW also says the more packs there are, the less conflict they have seen as they move within an established territory.

CPW says more information about the pack will be released in its 2026-27 annual report. That will be released in the spring of next year. The 2025-26 report is available on CPW's website.
