11,000+ warnings mailed out to speeders on I-25 from CDOT

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) - The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is considering making temporary speeding cameras on I-25 in Pueblo permanent.

Drivers in the work zone at the 1-25 and Highway 50 interchange will begin facing $75 fines for going 10 mph or more over the speed limit starting next Thursday. The cameras were installed in late June to enhance safety for crews during an extensive reconstruction project.

So far, the violations have only resulted in warnings for drivers who exceeded the speed limit.

This initial period has coincided with a reported 67% decrease in excessive speeding within the area.

Stacia Sellers, a CDOT representative, stated that the agency is evaluating the program.

"Since the warning period began in this area, we did issue 11,000 violations," Sellers said. "We're going to evaluate the success of the program and then determine from there if the cameras will continue to remain in the corridor or if they will come down after construction."

Sellers also indicated that CDOT is considering finding additional locations to expand the program to other parts of the state.

Pueblo is one of only three locations in Colorado where CDOT has implemented these cameras, with the other two sites located near Boulder and north of Denver.

Drivers are reminded that fines for exceeding the speed limit by 10 mph or more within the work zone will commence next Thursday.
