Colorado Springs woman dies in head-on crash on I-70 near Utah border

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- A Colorado Springs woman has been identified as the person killed in a head-on collision on I-70 near the Utah border.

Colorado State Patrol (CSP) confirmed the victim was a 32-year-old female from Colorado Springs who was driving a car going eastbound in westbound lanes near milepost 4 on I-70.

According to officials, the crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 20. Troopers responded to a call of a car travelling at a high rate of speed passing Rabbit Valley, west of Loma. Around ten minutes later, CSP responded to a head-on crash involving a Subaru Outback and a Ford F150.

The Outback, driven by the woman from Colorado Springs, had been travelling eastbound in westbound lanes before colliding with the F150, rotating down an embankment and catching on fire, CSP says. The driver of the Outback was pronounced dead at the scene.

Five occupants of the F150, including two minors, were all taken to local hospitals with serious injuries, according to CSP.

Traffic was diverted for around five hours until the road was reopened around 4:40 p.m. Monday.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing and led by CSP's Vehicular Crimes Unit. Anyone with information is asked to contact CSP Dispatch and reference case number VC260239.
