Multiple bear sightings across Colorado Springs, be bear-y aware!

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - The environmental conditions this year, including a historically low snowpack and drought, have drawn bears closer to residential areas as they seek sustenance.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) reported receiving about 30 calls specifically concerning bear sightings in the Colorado Springs area on Friday.

One incident in the Shook's Run neighborhood involved a bear knocking over and crushing a bird feeder. A photo sent by a viewer showed a bear at the feeder on its hind legs. Neighbors reported it was a mother bear accompanied by two cubs.

Valerie Cox, a local resident, described the unexpected nature of the encounters.

“I don't think anybody is expecting bears so close to town. It's honestly kind of shocking, you know, because you're just a little person. And then on top of it, like, it's a mama with its babies. You don't want to come out here and mess with it,” Cox said.

A viewer sent KRDO another video from the same Shook's Run neighborhood approaching their yard and investigating their trash cans.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife advises residents who find themselves in close proximity to a bear to “haze” it. This involves scaring the bear with loud noises such as a car horn or by rattling a can.

Residents are reminded to be aware of their surroundings, and CPW is asking for spotters to call the department with the location of the bear.
