Humane Society aids animals impacted by ‘Aspen Acres’ fire

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- The "Aspen Acres" fire has created huge challenges for people across southern Colorado. The same is true for animals. Many evacuees have been separated from their pets since the fire started.

The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) has been assisting with the care of animals affected by the historic blaze.

Cody Costra, with the HSPPR, says the organization has taken in 427 animals since the fires began. That was especially true in the early days.

"We were still taking in more animals. Really, I say every day, but it was more like every hour," Costra said.

HSPPR took in dogs, cats, snakes, and rabbits. All animals who need care while they're separated from their owners. All of them are living in a constant state of confusion.

"They don't fully understand what's going on," Costra said. "You know, these dogs have maybe never seen a leash before or maybe never seen a kennel before. A lot of these dogs that we've been taking in are used to being outside and being like livestock guardian type dogs."

Between vets, volunteers, and other staff, the Humane Society has hundreds of people who've been able to do things like taking dogs for walks, making toys for cats to play with, and cleaning kennels, providing the care the animals need until they can finally head home.

"I think some people have slept at the evacuation center because we have, you know, have been having around the clock care where they're, you know, here at all times. So it's it's been a lot," Costra said.
