Colorado State trooper recovering after accident on I-70

WATKINS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A Colorado State Patrol (CSP) trooper is recovering from injuries after an accident on I-70 over the weekend.

According to officials, the trooper attempted to stop a car going west on I-70 near Watkins that was in the left lane around 1 a.m. Saturday morning.

As the trooper and first car were pulling over, another car struck the patrol cruiser at a high rate of speed, pushing the trooper's car into the one that had been originally pulled over, according to CSP.

The trooper, as well as two other people in the car from the original traffic stop, were taken to a local hospital. All parties have since been released.

Officials say the original driver was charged with failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and driving without a license, and was cited for not having insurance and not following restrictions on an instruction permit.

The driver of the car that struck the trooper was arrested and later released with a summons to appear for suspected driving under the influence charges, according to CSP.
