Colorado rescue asks for help caring for sick mother dog, 12 newborn puppies

El Paso County Canine Rescue

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- El Paso County Canine Rescue is asking the community for help to raise funds for medical bills and supplies for a severely malnourished dog and her 12 puppies.

The rescue says they took in a young mother dog, known as "Mama Fancy," after severe flooding and ongoing animal overpopulation in Oklahoma shelters.

Fancy was rescued after living on her own, scavenging for food from dumpsters and garbage cans to survive, and, just days before being rescued, gave birth to 12 puppies, according to the rescue.

After arriving in Colorado, the rescue tells KRDO13 that Fancy had to be rushed to the vet, where they learned she was battling severe malnutrition, a significant worm burden, infection, anemia, and the immense physical demands of nursing a large litter.

“She has given everything she has to her puppies,” Julie Cousino, Operations Director, said. “After months of hunger, surviving outside, and now producing milk for a large litter, her body is exhausted.”

Fancy's puppies have been separated from her and are currently being bottle-fed, according to officials.

The rescue is asking the community to help raise money for medical bills and supplies, including formula for the puppies.
