Colorado nurse aide certification revoked after investigation into alleged sexual misconduct with patient

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado State Board of Nursing has revoked the certification of a Colorado Springs nurse aide following an investigation into allegations that he engaged in sexual contact with a patient under his care.

According to a disciplinary order issued by the board, Derek Castillo was employed as a certified nurse aide at Spring Grove Recovery in Colorado Springs when the incidents occurred.

The board found that on or about Nov. 8, 2025, surveillance video showed Castillo engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct with a patient. The order states the patient lifted her shirt and exposed her breasts while Castillo was working at the medication counter. Investigators said Castillo later went to the patient's room multiple times and was seen touching the patient's buttocks in an intimate manner.

The order also alleges Castillo was later captured on surveillance video in a hallway touching the same patient, including grabbing or squeezing the patient's breast and caressing the patient's buttocks.

As part of the investigation, the order states that Castillo underwent an evaluation with Peer Assistance Services on Feb. 18. According to the board, the evaluator concluded Castillo was not able to practice safely as a certified nurse aide.

The State Board of Nursing determined Castillo violated provisions of the Colorado Nurse and Nurse Aide Practice Act, including acting in a manner inconsistent with the health and safety of a patient and being unable to practice safely.

The board also cited statutory grounds related to substance abuse and physical or mental disability. However, the disciplinary order does not specify what evidence supported those findings beyond referencing the Peer Assistance Services evaluation.

The board ordered that Castillo's nurse aide certification be revoked, effective June 1.

Under Colorado law, Castillo has 30 days from the date of the order to request a formal hearing to challenge the board's decision. If no hearing is requested, the revocation becomes final.
