Spring enforcement operation targets vehicle registration violations

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- From April 5-11, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) is joining forces with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) and others for a "spring enforcement operation" to address expired and unregistered vehicle violations along Front Range roads and highways.

CSPD says that during this enforcement period, law enforcement will take "a zero-tolerance approach to any registration violations." According to CSPD, any motor vehicles, motorcycles, trailers and other applicable vehicles with fictitious license plates or expired registrations exceeding one year will be impounded and towed.

EPSO says the spring enforcement is in response to citizens' concerns and frustrations about the high number of vehicles with expired registrations.

KRDO13 Investigates recently looked into out-of-state plates in southern Colorado, finding that estimates from several years ago by the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles suggested roughly 92,000 vehicles may be operating in Colorado with out-of-state plates. It is unclear if that number has changed.

EPSO and CSPD say the following agencies will be participating in the enforcement:

  • El Paso County Clerk & Recorder
  • Colorado State Patrol
  • Monument Police Department
  • Fountain Police Department
  • Palmer Lake Police Department

EPSO says the key benefits of this operation will be the following:

  • Reinforcing compliance before increased travel during warmer months;
  • Encouraging voluntary renewals through heightened public awareness;
  • Supporting public safety by reducing uninsured and unregistered vehicles on the road; and
  • Bringing awareness to ongoing outreach efforts about convenient renewal options.

Residents can learn more about vehicle registration, renew their registration, and explore available services by visiting the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder’s Motor Vehicle Department website.
