Fort Carson expands emergency room access for veterans

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Following a recent change, veterans in the Pikes Peak area now have another option for accessing urgent medical care.

Evans Army Community Hospital at Fort Carson has expanded emergency room access to all veterans, available 24/7.

According to the VA, veterans can access the base by using their Department of Defense-issued ID card, whereas beneficiaries, guests, or private companies will need the following required documents to gain access:

  1. Valid Real-ID Driver’s License
  2. Vehicle registration and insurance
  3. For VA Beneficiaries only: Valid Veteran’s Health Identification Card (VHIC)

According to the VA, access can be requested in two ways with the above required documents:

  1. Visiting the pre-registration website – once pre-registered, proceed through gate 1 by presenting a driver’s license at the gate.
  2. Visiting Fort Carson Visitor Center at 6012 Nelson Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO 80902.
    1. For long-term installation access, veterans who wish to register and use their Veterans Health Id Card (VHIC) as an access credential must do so in person at the Fort Carson VCC. In this process, a VA beneficiary must bring their VHIC and provide a copy of their current/valid “Real ID” stamped driver’s license, vehicle registration and insurance. Once registered, the veteran will be able to access the installation for the duration of the VHIC. If the VHIC expires, the veteran must re-register the new credential.
