Downtown revitalization nears completion with wider sidewalks and safer streets

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Construction of the multi-block revitalization effort in downtown Colorado Springs is nearing completion as the second block now has wider sidewalks, upgraded lighting and enhanced pedestrian safety elements.

On Dec. 12, the city announced that Pikes Peak Avenue to Kiowa Street now has wider sidewalks, expanded outdoor dining areas, refreshed landscaping, and enhanced pedestrian safety elements. 

The city says these improvements create a more vibrant, accessible, and comfortable public space for residents and visitors year-round.

"I've been watching this project unfold over the...summer and the fall. I'm just glad it's done....I like the wider sidewalks because there's a lot of foot traffic downtown…especially on that block right there where the clubs are," says Hemi Eisner, who has been keeping an eye on the progress.

All four corners at Tejon Street and Pikes Peak Avenue, a historically busy corner, have been updated with curbs that slope gently to street level, making it more accessible for all.

"Previously, when the sidewalks were super narrow, there's so many people standing outside the clubs waiting to get inside, waiting for Ubers afterwards," says Eisner.

The improvements have also made it easier to access restaurants in the area.

"Our downtown is like a lot of bars and restaurants and shopping. There's a lot of foot traffic, so it's nice having it wider. But the new intersection, yeah, it's great. It's wider. There's more room to stand. Especially with the people on the scooters," says Eisner.

The city says the project team is taking a winter break, but they'll be back in the spring for a final round of improvements and upgrades in the area.
