Barry Morphew returns to court today, as sides argue over flight risk status
ALAMOSA COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) - Barry Morphew, the man accused of murdering his wife, Suzanne, is back in an Alamosa County courtroom today.
Ahead of his appearance, Morphew’s defense team filed several motions, including one that allows him to wear regular clothing instead of a jail uniform. He is also expected to appear without visible handcuffs.
Another motion seeks to reduce Morphew’s bond from $3 million to $500,000. His attorneys argue that he is not a flight risk, and the lower bond would allow him to return to work as a landscaper and spend time with his aging mother.
Meanwhile, Suzanne Morphew’s brother filed a victim impact statement, calling Barry indeed a flight risk and describing him as a “serial psychopathic controller of all in the realm of his influence.” (Find the full statement here.)
Morphew was first charged with Suzanne’s murder in 2021, but that case was dismissed. New evidence - including the discovery of an animal tranquilizer in Suzanne’s remains, which the prosecution says only Morphew had access to - has led to a second trial.
