AURORA, Colo. (KRDO) -- A 12-year-old boy has died after being hit by a distracted driver, according to the Aurora Police Department.

The police department says that on Saturday morning, the boy was riding his scooter across East Illiff Avenue near South Wheel Park Circle. Police say the boy was using the crosswalk with an activated signal.

"Unfortunately, he was hit by a 19-year-old driver who was not paying attention and failed to stop for the signal," said the Aurora Police Department.

The police department says the investigation is ongoing, and their support is with the family during this time.

Aurora police say they hope this incident will remind all drivers to avoid distractions while driving.

"Your life, and the lives of others, depend on it," said the Aurora Police Department.
