Coloradans lost more than $243 million to online scammers in 2024

STATEWIDE, Colo. (KRDO) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released new data on internet crime, stating that Coloradans reported losing more than $243 million to online scammers in 2024.
The data comes from reports made to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Colorado ranked 7th in the nation for complaints filed per capita, the FBI said.
People age 60 or older made the most reports, according to the FBI. That age group in Colorado reportedly lost more than $74,400,000 to internet scams.
“This report serves as a sobering reminder that Coloradans — especially senior citizens— continue to be prime targets for scammers who will jump at every opportunity to defraud potential victims," said FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek in a press release.
Nationwide, the FBI says reports to the IC3 increased 33 percent since 2023.
The FBI says people who believe they have been victim of an internet crime should file a report at IC3.gov.
