Charter bus strikes, kills Broadmoor employee near World Arena in Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - An investigation is underway following a fatal auto/pedestrian crash near the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).
The City of Colorado Springs first reported the crash at Bob Johnson Drive and Willwood Road at approximately noon on Thursday. The city said Willwood Road closed just south of Bob Johnson Drive. CSPD said the other end of Bob Johnson Drive also closed at Venetucci Boulevard.
CSPD says a charter bus hit an employee working in the parking lot. The department said the bus had been there for an event at the ice rink, but besides the driver, no one else was onboard.
KRDO13 reached out to Arrow Stage Lines, who told us, "We have no comment at this time."
CSPD's Major Crash Team responded to the scene, which was visible to drivers along I-25 on Thursday afternoon.
Police say they are still working to identify whether speed, distracted driving, or other factors played a role in the crash. CSPD has confirmed the victim was male, but his identity has not been released at this time.
The Broadmoor World Arena released the following statement:
A tragic accident occurred earlier today outside of The Broadmoor World Arena that has resulted in the loss of one of our dear team members. Out of respect for the family, we are not releasing any further details or personal information at this time. We are devastated by this tragedy and hold the victim’s family closely in our hearts. We are working directly with the CSPD as they gather more information. This incident that occurred was isolated and does not pose a threat to anyone in or around the arena. Events that have been planned to be held at The Broadmoor World Arena will continue as scheduled.
