UPDATE: Fountain Police confirm officers shot alleged robber

KRDO

FOUNTAIN, Colo. (KRDO) - Fountain Police say two officers each shot a suspected robber while trying to make an arrest.

In a statement sent to KRDO 13, FPD reports just before 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning they responded to the Walgreens located at 7910 Fountain Mesa Road for a reported robbery where the suspect had threatened employees and claimed he had a bomb and a gun.

Officers say the male fled on foot towards the Lowe’s shopping center after stealing items from Walgreens.

FPD says two officers tried to apprehend the suspect in the parking lot of a nearby Chase Bank and that is when the two officers fired at least one round each striking the suspect.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. One officer was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The Chase Bank is right next to Dunkin’ Donuts. KRDO 13 spoke with the manager of the coffee chain who said it was a scary sight to see during their morning rush.

“We were just mid-rush and then it was around 9:00, 9:30, we were still super busy and then all I heard was a couple [of] shots,” said store manager, Marian Vigil.

The drive-thru window of the Dunkin’ Donuts faces directly out to the drive-thru at the Chase Bank.

“My employees ended up frantically like, getting down as well. They were by the window and there they came and got me. They were like, oh, we just heard some shots. We looked outside the window and then we just saw the incident right there by the Chase [Bank]. The man ended up on the ground and then the police and then a bunch of like, bystanders were there as well as supporting them,” recounts Vigil.

Vigil and other witnesses say they heard multiple gunshots.

“We were all pretty scared. We didn't know what was going to happen with, like, obviously hearing that many shots. We don't know where they're flying from and, who that could hit or who could have been hurt during that time. So yeah, we were all shaken up pretty bad,” Vigil shared.

Vigil says she gave time for her employees to recover, but they weren’t the only ones shaken up by what they saw.

“We're very family-oriented. So we have a bunch of families going through [the drive-thru]. This one family ended up coming through at the same exact time [of the incident]. A little girl was in the back and they were just all scared. They were crying. So, I felt bad for them. I feel bad for everybody that ended up being in my drive-thru during that time that they had to experience such a graphic tragedy,” said Vigil.

Both FPD officers have been placed on paid administrative leave and the Colorado Springs Police Department now leads the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

KRDO 13 asked CSPD if the suspect pointed a gun or made threats toward the police officers. CSPD responded it's a part of the ongoing investigation.
