Semi-trailer fire causes southbound slowing on I-25 near Interquest Friday morning
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (KRDO13) -- Travelers ran into delays Friday morning as traffic at I-25 and Interquest Parkway was slowed due to an Amazon truck that caught fire.
The incident happened around 5 a.m., between Exit 156 at Northgate Boulevard and Exit 153 at Interquest Parkway, Mile Point 153, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
Around 7 a.m., the fire was out and fire trucks cleared the scene, but the Amazon truck had been completely burned.
Both southbound lanes reopened but traffic moved slowly for a time.
According to the Air Force Academy, the driver of the truck made it out of the vehicle safely.
Fire Chief Ron Prettyman said that the Academy responded because the eight miles of I-25 between the north and south gates are actually on the Academy's property and within its jurisdiction.
"Vehicle accidents, car fires, whatever it is, we respond out there about 300 times a year," he said.
The Colorado State Patrol told KRDO 13 that the cause of the fire was a blown tire that caused a mechanical failure on the truck; no hazardous materials were released and no injuries were reported.
The vehicle's trailer was not affected and Amazon planned to respond from Denver to pick it up.
