Scooter rider killed in hit-and-run in Colorado Springs identified, suspect in custody

COLORADO SPRING, Colo. (KRDO) - On April 26, 2024, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to Platte Ave. and Academy Blvd. for a hit-and-run crash.

According to CSPD, responding officers found that a man was riding a scooter east on Platte Ave. when he was struck by a vehicle that left the scene. The man on the scooter was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased man has been identified by the El Paso County Coroner as 51-year-old Rueben Ziemer.

CSPD said the driver of the vehicle that fled was identified the day after the incident as 33-year-old Andrew Bjornstad. He has been taken into custody and charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death.
