Second avalanche hits California slopes near where a skier was killed one day earlier

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A second avalanche has been reported at a California resort near Lake Tahoe, one day after a major avalanche roared down an adjoining mountain, trapping several people and killing a 66-year-old man. Nobody was hurt in Thursday’s snowslide at Alpine Meadows. After closing down every lift and trail in the aftermath of Wednesday’s avalanche, neighboring Palisades Tahoe reopened many runs on Thursday. A storm blanketed the area Wednesday when the avalanche hit around 9:30 a.m. on an expert black diamond run served by the famous KT-22 lift at Palisades Tahoe. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office identified the person killed as Kenneth Kidd, a resident of nearby Truckee and Point Reyes. Three others were injured.
