Overnight I-25 lane closures in Colorado Springs this week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Multiple lanes of I-25 will be closed starting tonight, Jan. 1, as Colorado Department of Transportation crews continue work on the merging lane improvement project.

Beginning at 8 o’clock tonight, crews will close the southbound I-25 righthand lane between mile marker 146: Garden of the Gods Road and mile marker 144: the Centennial Boulevard exit (formerly called the Fontanero Street exit).

That area will reopen Wednesday morning at 6 a.m.

After a two day break, crews will completely close Ellston Street, over I-25, starting at 7 a.m. on Friday - reopening Saturday.

Engineers from CDOT say they’re trying to limit the disturbance to motorist. However, they ask drivers to bear with them in the meantime.

“Be patient. Most of the I-25 work, we are actually planning on doing at night. But, Ellston Street we’re going to have an intermittent closure. It's going to be a long project, so people just need to be patient," CDOT resident engineer, Yun Su Han said.

CDOT says this weeks changes are to update the aging Ellston Street Bridge and to add merging lanes to help with congestion on I-25.

The project is scheduled to be completed by next November.
