Woman hit by drunk driver urges people to celebrate safely this new year, local law firm offering free rides

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -We're only days away from new years eve, but festivities aside it can be a dangerous time to be on the road. Thankfully, a local law firm is continuing its tradition of offering free cab rides home on New Years Eve.

A previous client of the McDivitt Law Firm, Paula Bledsoe told KRDO 13 that while she did survive her crash, she is still dealing with back pain to this day,a situation that could of been much worse.That's why for those who don't have a designated driver on New Years Eve,Mcdivitt is offering free rides, to avoid a potentially deadly alternative.

"It really angers me that people get behind a wheel because they think they're okay and they're not. I was lucky that I wasn't hurt worse. I'm glad that in a way I stopped her from driving further," said Bledsoe

In the summer of 2021 Bledsoe was driving to pick up her daughter from work. She was stopped at a light on Boulder St. and Tejon St. when a drunk driver came out of nowhere and slammed into her car.

"All of a sudden I just heard a sound and someone crashed into my driver's side door," said Bledsoe. 

To this day, she said she still has pain and back issues from the accident and for a long time it gave Bledsoe anxiety to get behind the wheel.

"Even when I was in the car with someone, I would jump and it scared the driver because just out of nowhere, I would jump because I would see a car come over, even if they were doing it, you know, legally coming over to another lane, it would scare me," said Bledsoe

Now,  Bledsoe is one of thousands of people that the Mcdivitts have represented. The firm believes that paying for all those free rides -- about 20,000 so far -- is a small price to pay if it helps avert another tragedy.

"One thing that's common to all of them is their lives are totally turned upside down. Their lives aren't the same as they were before the accident," said Mike McDitvitt, CEO of McDivitt Law Firm.
