2 kids taken to the hospital after ‘vaping marijuana’ at Colorado Springs middle school

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Colorado Springs School District 11 confirmed with KRDO that crews responded to Sabin Middle School Thursday morning due to a "vaping" incident involving multiple students.
According to the district, eight students were involved in "vaping high-concentrated marijuana." Two students were taken to a hospital for "elevated heartbeats." The Colorado Springs Fire Department confirmed that they responded to the incident.
Sarah Walgenbach, the director of substance use disorder programming for Diversus Health, explained how much THC someone is consuming when vaping can vary. She also added every person reacts differently to the substance.
"One of the issues with vaping and the high concentration is that it delivers an extremely large amount of THC into your body very quickly," Walgenbach said. "So you don't know how much you're getting."
Walgenbach encourages parents to have open conversations about drug usage with their kids.
"Peer pressure is a real thing among kiddos, and so giving your kid an exit plan, how would you leave that situation or say no, if somebody offered you marijuana and then talked to them about their decision and [talking about], what would they say if somebody would offer drugs," Walgenbach said.
