Denver Zoo receives accreditation by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums

Denver Zoo

DENVER, Colo. (KRDO)-- The Denver Zoo announced that it has been accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), a status the Zoo has maintained since 1976.

The AZA is dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of animal care, wildlife conservation, education, science and recreation.

The Denver Zoo stated its five-year accreditation follows an extensive, comprehensive evaluation of its operations and programs, and continues to uphold its position as one of the top zoos in North America and a leader in animal care and conservation.

According to Zoo officials, fewer than 10 % of the 2,800 wildlife exhibitors licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) under the Animal Welfare Act meet the comprehensive standards of AZA accreditation

Accredited organizations are evaluated every five years by a team of expert inspectors for animal welfare, care, and management—including living environments, social groupings, health, and nutrition.

They also look at all other aspects of the organization’s operations, from wildlife conservation impact and research to education programs and finances.

In addition to the AZA accreditation, the Denver Zoo has also earned its American Humane Certified™ seal in 2020, for the treatment of the animals in its care.

Similar to an AZA inspection, Zoo officials stated they  passed the rigorous, expert third-party audits to join a growing number of leading zoological institutions that have received the American Humane Certified™ designation.

“AZA accreditation is the ultimate stamp of approval for our profession, and assures our guests and members that we’re providing the best possible care for our animals and creating a safe, enjoyable experience for our community,” said Bert Vescolani, President & CEO of Denver Zoo. “We’re beyond proud to be among the very few zoos and aquariums in the world that maintains such a high standard across our programs and operations.”
