Source of natural gas/propane smell in southeast Colorado Springs likely mercaptan odorant spill

KRDO

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Following hundreds of reports of smelling the natural gas of propane in southeast Colorado Springs, Colorado Springs Utilities said the likely cause.

According to Black Hills Energy, the odor is likely the result of a Black Hills Energy mercaptan (odorant added to natural gas) spill at the Squirrel Creek gate station in Fountain.

Springs Utilities said the winds have blown the smell of mercaptan into the Colorado Springs area. People are asked to contact Black Hills Energy for more information.

At 12:47 p.m., the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) said it was responding to multiple calls reporting the smell of natural gas or propane in southeast Colorado Springs.
