COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Mountain Metropolitan Transit (MMT) saw a record number of boardings over the past two months.

According to MMT, July boarding set an all-time MMT record for the most passenger trips in a single month, and fixed-route boardings increased by 243,547 during June and July 2023 as compared to the same period last year. MMT also saw a 62 percent increase in trips on fixed-route buses in July compared to July 2022.

“With our expanded service and free rides, we are seeing a lot of people using public transit here in Colorado Springs, and that means cleaner air, less traffic congestion, and more people who are saving money getting where they need to go," Transit Division Manager Lan Rao said.

For two years in a row, MMT has participated in the Zero Fare for Better Air statewide initiative designed to reduce ground-level ozone by increasing the use of public transit. The free fares are made possible by last year’s  Colorado Senate Bill 22-180 and this year’s Colorado House Bill 23-1101 .

Free rides continue through August.
