Colorado Springs Utilities project to leave 100+ customers without water along Academy Blvd.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- About 120 Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) customers will be without water for three days beginning Tuesday. This is due to the utility company working on the first phase of a water valve project near Academy Boulevard.

The Academy corridor water valve replacement project aims to improve water reliability for those customers and also prevent unplanned outages in the future.

Following water main breaks throughout the city, Springs Utilities said this water valve replacement project is necessary.

"This pipe was installed in, oh gosh, I think the 1930s. It's an old pipe and we have old infrastructure. It needs to be updated just like anything else in our system," said Carrie Guy, a Customer Engagement Specialist for Colorado Springs Utilities.

The goal of the project is to put isolation valves at key intersections along Academy Blvd., so that when needed, the water system can be shut off to certain areas and not the entire corridor.

The company said it realized the urgent need for the project after a large water main break in 2021.

Though the company will have to shut down the water to customers for three days, officials believe it's a temporary inconvenience for the long-term goal of reliable water.

The affected customers will be without water beginning Tuesday, May 2, through Thursday, May 4.

"We'd actually like to thank our community for really having patience with us and understanding this is a really needed project," said Guy.

To ease the burden, crews will be working 24 hours a day through the water outage to get the work done as quickly as possible.

The construction at Academy Blvd. and Maizeland Rd. is expected to be cleared up at the latest by May 26, which will wrap up the first phase of this water valve replacement project.
