Colorado State Patrol: Man in wheelchair dies after crash with El Paso Co. Sheriff’s deputy vehicle

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- An investigation is underway after a deadly crash involving an El Paso County Sheriff's deputy and a pedestrian. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the victim was in a wheelchair at the time of the crash.

At 6:50 a.m., troopers received a call of a crash involving a sheriff's deputy Wednesday at 2739 E. Las Vegas St., near the El Paso County Jail.

According to CSP, a deputy was driving without lights or sirens and following posted speeds at 6:39 a.m. While driving southbound in the 2800 block of E. Las Vegas St. in a 2020 Chevy Tahoe SUV, the deputy reportedly hit the back of the wheelchair. The man was ejected from his chair.

CSP said the man had been slowly moving southbound in the travel lane of E. Las Vegas St. at the time of the crash.

The deputy stopped and tried rendering medical aid. However, CSP said the man was declared dead at the scene.

According to CSP, the deputy wasn't hurt in the crash.

CSP said at when the accident happened, there was insufficient street and ambient light to illuminate the area. According to CSP, the man was wearing dark clothing and didn't have any reflective markings or lights on themselves or their wheelchair.

At this time, the investigators are working to identify the man and contact next of kin.

Wednesday afternoon, the EPCSO identified the deputy as Greg Stoneham. According to the sheriff's office, Dep. Stoneham has been with the EPCSO since April 2007. He ha since been placed on administrative leave per policy.

The road was closed for nearly five hours Wednesday morning.

The sheriff's office told KRDO Colorado State Patrol is leading the investigation. According to CSP, the EPCSO is cooperating with the investigation.
