Responsible dog adoption as the holidays approach
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Many dogs are adopted around the holidays. An event Sunday held at Under the Sun Dog Training and Daycare called 'Meet the Breeds' helped people looking for a pup get to know which breed is the best fit for them and their lifestyle.
Each breed has a specific purpose in why they were bred, including mixed breeds. It's important to be educated on that before adopting.
"You need to know what those breeds' characteristics are, "Under the Sun Dog Training and Daycare Owner Colton Johnson said. "Even if you have a mixed breed. If you have a husky shepherd mix, you should research both of those breeds because you're gonna find characteristics in both of those breeds you need to know about."
Some factors to consider are energy level, mental stimulation, and sociability.
"Also exercise and what you have available for that dog," Jill Chase said with the Colorado Springs Kennel Club. "There's dogs that are aloof that aren't gonna mind you being home all day. But there's some dogs that need you there and want to be with you all day."
If you don't do research ahead of time, it could end in the worst case for the dog.
"The worst thing that can happen to any dog is for the dog to continue to be re-homed time after time," Johnson said.
With the holidays approaching, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region advises against giving dogs away as gifts unless the recipient is already prepared and on board.
"Owning a pet is a commitment for 10 to 15 years," Cody Costra said with the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. "So if you're gonna give a pet as a gift, it's important that person is on board with having that responsibility."
Having a dog is also a big financial commitment.
According to the ASPCA, owning a dog costs approximately $500 to $1,000 a year at minimum. This price tag includes food, veterinary care, toys, grooming, and unexpected medical expenses. Rover estimates the high to be close to $3,500.
There are resources to connect people to the right breed or dog temperament for them, before making the commitment to adopt.
The American Kennel Club has a full list of all dog breeds on its website along with a description. They also have a quiz that asks a series of questions to help guide in the selection process.
The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region has a list of adoptable dogs located at both their Colorado Springs and Pueblo facilities on their website.
