Family mourns loved one after multi-car crash leaves one dead in Southwest Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A family is now mourning the death of a loved one after a multi-crash accident on Friday night left one dead and several injured.

On Sunday night, on the corner of Cheyenne Rd. and Lake Ave. a vigil was held to honor the life of 32-year-old Michael Tapia Jr., though police have yet to identify the victim, family members KRDO spoke with have confirmed the loss of their loved one.

Colorado Springs is on pace to have its deadliest year on the roads with 51 people killed already in traffic accidents this year.

Steve Noblitt with Colorado Springs Police says Friday night's deadly car crash is the 50th of the year.

“We see a high number of vehicles turning left in fatal crashes in this town because we have these solid green lights unfortunately a lot of times people don't see traffic coming," said Noblitt.

Five other people were hurt in Friday night's crash, police believe alcohol was a factor.

"What we are asking is that citizens really think about what you are doing when you are driving your cars out here, slow down I know we are all in hurry but please drive with courtesy., said Noblitt.

The father of the man who died on Friday night is now facing a vehicular homicide charge.
