Colorado Springs Police investigating after candidate’s signs vandalized with ‘Hail Satan’

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Springs Police are now investigating after Republican candidate for El Paso County Commissioner Cami Bremer reported several of her campaign signs were stolen and vandalized Monday, some spray painted with the words, "Hail Satan."

Bremer says she discovered signs were missing and vandalized at three intersections in the city yesterday after receiving texts and calls from concerned residents.

"Ballot day should have been an exciting day," said Cami Bremer. "Instead, I woke up in the morning to some incredibly offensive things that had been said and done. Honestly, as an elected official, sometimes I'm used to that, but this went far beyond in terms of interfering with an election.”

According to Colorado law, the vandalism and theft of campaign signs is not a prank, it's a crime.

Jeremy Loew, a criminal defense attorney in Colorado Springs, says the violation in this specific window of time is even greater, due to campaign guidelines that prohibit tampering with signs forty-five days before the election.

If those responsible are caught, they could face an additional $750 fine.

Colorado Springs Police (CSPD) say they have not identified a suspect or a motive yet, but they say the incident appears to be a case of misdemeanor criminal mischief and theft.

Bremer says some of the signs stolen Monday contained trackers. The tracking information has been turned over to CSPD.

John Jarrell, the Democratic candidate running against Bremer says he hasn't experienced any vandalism or theft, but he put up the first of his signs Tuesday morning.
