Safe Routes to School Grant prepared for two Pueblo District 60 schools

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- The City of Pueblo and School District 60 voted unanimously to prepare a safe routes to school grant application for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

This would improve safety and accessibility around two east-side schools in Pueblo. If this grant comes through, this would add sidewalks, ADA-compliant ramps, bike lanes, and road markings at various places along Monument Ave.

The total project area spans from East Second St. to East 12 St. along Monument Ave. where Park View Elementary and the Risley International Academy of Innovation are located.

The Pueblo Area Council of Governments Transportation Director explained the need, saying there are broken and missing sidewalks, and missing ADA curb ramps for handicapped people and mothers pushing strollers.

She also said from 2017 to 2022 there have been 280 accidents within a two-mile radius of this corridor. Including seven pedestrians, two school-aged children, two bicyclists, and one individual in a wheelchair.

The improvements would include six-foot-wide sidewalks along the west side of Monument Avenue, five-foot-wide bicycle lanes with three-foot buffers on each side, and twelve ADA curb ramps.

More information about the Safe Routes to School Grant can be found on the CDOT website.
