Group on a mission to find Colorado families related to those on the WWII USS Indianapolis
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The USS Indianapolis CA-35 Legacy Education Committee Project 888 (LECP) is looking for 14 Colorado families that were killed on the USS Indianapolis.
Nine Indy Heroes were killed in action by a Japanese kamikaze before the Okinawa Gunto Campaign on March 31, 1945. Three months later, 879 Heroes aboard the Indy were killed in action and lost at sea when the Indy was torpedoed and sunk on July 30, 1945. It was the greatest loss of life from a combatant ship during World War II.
The LECP says that they are on a quest to find all 888 families of Indy’s K.I.A. Heroes, who didn't return home to their family's loving embrace.
The group is visiting Colorado searching for the 14 families of Indy’s local Colorado Heroes, to share stories about their lost loved ones: their childhood, family, their personality, their gifts, talents, and interests, their decision to join the military, how they were assigned on Indianapolis, their photos and letters home, their hopes, dreams, and goals for the future, and premonitions about their fate.
According to the LECP, one Colorado Hero is from Colorado Springs, two are from Pueblo, and one is from Yellow Jacket.
