CSU Pueblo hosting event for brain injury survivors

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO)-- Friday, CSU Pueblo is hosting a free event for brain injury survivors, caregivers, and providers.

While this event is to highlight brain injury surviors, the leader of the program said anyone can come out and participate. This event is in partnership with the non-profit, Pueblo Brain Injury.

Maria Martinez, director of Pueblo Brain Injury, said this program helps people with brain injuries feel more independent.

"It's really cohesive when you see other people because the camaraderie and the support is super amazing," said Maria Martinez.

Martinez said active events like this help people with brain injuries work with one another and help build back their cognitive strength.

Janon Bently is attending the event Friday. He suffered a major brain injury 15 years ago. He has difficulty forming words and is permanently in a wheelchair.

On July 7th, 2007, Jaron Bentley was in a car accident in Spain. Their car was T-boned by another car. Jaron was one of the survivors.

Jaron's mom, Deborah Bentley, said it's important he still enjoys life. That's why Jaron is excited for the outdoor pursuit program at CSU Pueblo this Friday.

The event takes place September 23 from 10 a.m. to noon.
