Mitchell High student suffers traumatic brain injury from hit-and-run walking home from school
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A 17-year-old Mitchell High School student is recovering from a traumatic brain injury, road rash, and bruising, after being hit by a car while walking home from school.
According to her mother, Bayla was crossing Galley Road just after 10 a.m. on Sept. 13 to come home for an appointment when she was hit. The driver of that vehicle reportedly drove away and has not yet been found by Colorado Springs police.
"I am livid because I don't understand how a woman could have hit a child and then leave without contacting the police or medical or anything," said Nellie, Bayla's mother.
Scared and hurt, Bayla ran the rest of the way home, where Nellie called 911. Bayla was taken to Memorial Central Hospital and diagnosed with a concussion, a traumatic brain injury, and a foreign object in her knee that doctors expect to be a rock or part of a vehicle.
Before this accident, Bayla was set to graduate early in December. She is currently unable to go to school.
"She has to lay in her bed in the dark off the TV, off computers, all of these things because of her brain injury," said Nellie.
Colorado Springs Police have confirmed the vehicle that hit Bayla is a silver 2011 GMC Acadia with the license plate number ASA-J36.
