COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- September is National Recovery Month.

An event taking place next weekend in Colorado Springs will celebrate addiction recovery and honor those who have lost their lives to addiction.

March Into the Light will be held Saturday, Sept. 24 at America the Beautiful Park. The event will be free and open to the public and feature a one-mile walk into the sunrise at 7 a.m., a 5k, and a fun run at 9 a.m.

Community members from Colorado Springs including Rafael Chanza, Colorado Springs Police Department Commander, and Jim Johnson, Chairman and CEO of GE Johnson Construction Co. will speak at the event. Colorado residents will also share their stories of hope and recovery.

March Into the Light is hosted by Face It TOGETHER, an addiction wellness nonprofit that started
in Sioux Falls, SD in 2009. The organization says it provides effective, nonjudgmental peer coaching for
those impacted by addiction, including loved ones.

“The Colorado Springs Police Department is proud to partner with other agencies who are committed
to addressing the epidemic of addiction in our community,” said Adrian Vasquez, Chief of the
Colorado Springs Police Department. “Like Face It TOGETHER, we believe in harm reduction,
peer-based recovery, and helping people who need it before law enforcement becomes necessary. An
entire community, working together, gives us the greatest opportunity to positively impact lives.”

Light refreshments will be available throughout the event and prizes will be awarded to 5K participants.
