4 fatal accidents in 4 days in Colorado Springs, police identify victims

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Between Aug. 26 and Aug. 29, four fatal vehicle crashes occurred in Colorado Springs.

There have now been 34 fatal crashes in the city this year. Colorado Springs police said almost half of these have involved motorcycles.

On Aug. 26, there was an auto/pedestrian accident at the intersection of South 8th St. and Lower Gold Camp Rd. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as 52-year-old Steven Fox of Colorado Springs. This was the 31st fatal accident in the city in 2022.

On Aug. 28, there was a multiple-vehicle crash on I-25 in the area of Woodmen Rd. Police said this accident involved a vehicle driving south in the northbound lanes. That vehicle crashed into two other vehicles. When police arrived on scene, they discovered the wrong way driver had died. Everyone in the other two vehicles was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The deceased has been identified as 41-year-old Kaulana Watson of Lafayette, Colorado. This was the 32nd fatal accident in the city in 2022.

On the morning of Aug. 29, there was a single-vehicle crash just past the intersection of Payton Circle and Brady Rd. Police said the vehicle traveled off the road and struck two trees before catching on fire. Citizens pulled the lone occupant from the vehicle before it became engulfed in flames. He was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as 72-year-old Esad Heldic of Colorado Springs. This was the 33rd fatal accident in the city in 2022.

On the evening of Aug. 29, there was an accident involving a motorcycle that struck a truck in the 2700 block of South Cirlce Dr. Police said a truck was traveling east on Circle and was trying to make a left turn into a parking lot. The first two lanes of westbound South Circle Drive traffic were stopped, and witnesses waived the driver of the truckr through to complete the left turn. The truck crossed the first two lanes of westbound traffic, and upon entering the third lane it was struck by a motorcycle that was heading westbound. The driver of the motorcycle was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as 38-year-old David Melendy of Colorado Springs. This was the 34th fatal accident in the city in 2022.
