How inflation might affect tailgating for the upcoming football season

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Football season is fast approaching this fall, which means eating, drinking, and spending time with family and friends at tailgates. But this year, however, all the fun before and after the game is going to cost more.

With inflation driving up costs on food and transportation, an economist told KRDO that fans might be switching to different food items so they can still enjoy their tailgate while dodging rising costs.

"It wouldn't surprise me if you do see consumers around the margin try to find the most cost-effective way to still enjoy that experience," Wells Fargo Economist Michael Pugliese said. "Be it different transportation options, substituting different things on the game day plate, or whatever it takes to still realize the experience without breaking the bank."

Economists say chicken and ground beef have risen 17.6% since August of last year. But proteins such as pork ribs and hot dogs have only risen 4-5%. As a whole, beer and wine are up less than overall grocery prices this year.

"If you're thinking about grilling out, maybe lean a little more towards fresh fruits and vegetables," Pugliese said. "Which are up mid-single digits, which again is not nothing, you're still going to feel that price change. But when you compare it to 13% for overall food prices or 18% for chicken it is definitely a lot less."

However, when fans think about grilling in the parking lot, they should brace for propane to cost 22% more.

Gas prices are up 25% from last year, so taking mass transit would be a cost-effective alternative. Otherwise, fans can carpool and split expenses.

For those trying to save some money, televisions are down in price this year from last year by 15%. So considering staying home and watching the game is another cost-effective alternative.
