Vitalant saw a 50% drop in supplies this summer, now saying Colorado has a blood emergency

DENVER, Colo. (KRDO) -- A non-profit blood donation organization says a recent depletion in supplies has created what they describe as a "blood emergency."

Vitalant, which supplies blood services to 75 Colorado hospitals and roughly 900 hospitals nationwide, said its supplies have depleted by nearly 50% since the beginning of summer.

“Hospitals need people to donate during these critical weeks,” said Vitalant Chief Medical and Scientific Officer Dr. Ralph Vassallo in a press release. “Patient blood needs don’t conform to a predictable schedule. Several patients may experience emergencies, while a planned surgery could suddenly require dozens of units of blood for one patient. Hospitals must have blood available to take care of everyone.”

Providers are urging everyone eligible to donate to do so as soon as possible.

Vitalant is offering a $6 prepaid gift card to anyone who donates through Aug. 31. Donors will also be entered to win one of five $3,000 prepaid gift cards.
