Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles launches DMV2GO to reach underserved communities
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO)-- The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles is launching a new program meant to better reach underserved residents throughout the state.
According to officials, DMV2GO will give access to people who don't normally have access to in-office driver's license services by bringing the DMV to them. This includes people who live in rural areas, people living in long-term care facilities, and people experiencing homelessness.
The program includes the DMV2GO RV and two pop-up driver's license offices that can be set up anywhere in the state. The mobile office has the same services as the standard office, with access to online vehicle registration and driver record services, but it won't include the driver knowledge tests and endorsement exams.
"There are areas in Colorado that can take over an hour to get to a state driver license office, and we’re always looking for ways to better serve Coloradans. With DMV2GO we want to hit the road and go help people," said Derek Kuhn with the Division of Motor Vehicles.
A pilot program started last year and helped dozens of people affected by the Marshall Fire in Boulder County. During the one-month program, they visited 191 locations and helped close to 3,000 Coloradans with ID cars and driver's licenses.
Currently, DMV2G0 does not require appointments for pop-up events. Coloradans interested in having DMV2GO visit their nonprofit, community center, senior living facility, library, or correctional facility can request a visit online.
